Hi.

Welcome to our life as we homeschool our kids with a twist!

Week in the Life of an Unschooler | Austin, Renaissance Festival, and Water Balloons!

Week in the Life of an Unschooler | Austin, Renaissance Festival, and Water Balloons!

Here are the latest and greatest photos from the past few weeks. It's funny, while we're not feeling the big shift to summer break from a traditional school...we are definitely in summer mode.  We're not intentionally doing anything differently, but when I look back at these images I think we are a little.

It's just natural to do more swimming and laying around in the dog days of summer.  Yes, Denver gets hot, too!  It's going to be 100 degrees today and 101 tomorrow.

And because I can't stop taking photos, I'll break up different things into separate categories!

Another roundup of how we homeschool is up on the blog today-our tenth installment of the "Week in the Life of an Unschooler" series.  We traveled to Austin and tried to stay cool as June was a hot one in Denver!

Roadtrip to Austin and Marble Falls

We stayed with Grandma Texas in Marble Falls and the kids played with their Texas cousins--it's an amazing stage of life when the kids get to play in the pool and the moms get stay in their regular clothes on the sidelines LOL

Townes was obsessed with the baby birds on grandma's porch...grandma didn't like the bird poo, but it was worth it.  I introduced the kids to Doug the Pug, the groundskeepers found a snake, and grandma let the kids go hog wild over some packing bubble packages.  I also made the cousins pose for some pics :)

Kate and I did some food and restaurant exploration in Marble Falls.  We found the cutest coffee shop, Numinous Coffee Roasters , just down the street from grandma's house.

Kate managed to spill her entire smoothie on the floor while we were there, but the owners could not have been more chilled out about it.  Accidents happen and they totally turned a gross (literally) situation into a funny story.

They roast their own coffee beans and their food menu is allergy conscious.  Plus, their cookies were AMAZING.  Kate excitedly reported that "they put salt on their cookies, like we do!!"

How we homeschool--the week in the life of an unschooler--is up on the blog today!  Kate enjoyed her treats at Numinous Coffee Roasters.

I tried one of their gluten-free cookies and it was really good.  Not as good as Kate's chocolate chip cookie, but still a nice (and hearty) treat.

We also found this popular food truck, R & B's Silver Spartan not five minutes from Grandma TX's house.  It was quite the experience.  Kate asked the owner what it was like to own a food truck.  She gave Kate an honest reply:  "You have to REALLY love cooking and REALLY love people."  And I added, "and you have to REALLY like being hot!"  To which the owner agreed :)

We got a philly cheeseteak and a chicken cheesesteak, the green chili tater tots, and an order of the funnel cake fries--a better version of the traditional funnel cake.  Kate was in heaven and Barb and I enjoyed our cheesesteaks.  Next time we're in town we'll have to try their gyros.

Miscellaneous

I dropped some chocolate while we were driving and I couldn't find it.  Then I came back to the car after a lunch stop and it slowly dawned on me that I had a big melted chocolate spot on my butt that made it look like I pooped my pants.  Yep.

Melted chocolate from a long day on the road.  Definitely not the best spot to be sitting when there's melted chocolate ;(

Tinker Crate this month was a fun catapult arcade that Townes did by himself and that Kate had me shoot grapes into her mouth LOL

Townes loved his catapult Tinker Crate this month :)

After being on the road and being out of town, the kids asked for a pajama day to just veg out.  Which is funny because they basically vegged out on vacation, but I get it.  It's exhausting being away from home and road tripping.  Kate took her accessorizing to the next level while in her PJs.  She was ready for anything ;)

pj day after a long trip

Townes took on vacuuming the truck the day after we got home.  It looked a bomb went off in there!

Sunsets in Colorado are so dang pretty...I only wish there was an ocean and a beach to go along with them LOL  #someday

 Colorado sunsets are beautiful.

More recovery and vegging out....for a tutorial on how to make this oversized art, check out this post on engineering prints.

Vegging out on the couch is a skill these kids don't need to improve.  Why homeschooling is good is there is plenty of time for downtime!

Beyblade battles are still a thing in our house even though the show is long over and most kids have moved on...

Beyblade battles are still going strong in our house.  Kate's getting a new one for her birthday ;)

Colorado Renaissance Festival

If you follow us on Instagram, you would've seen my sob story about how rain and misery follows us to theme parks and events...so we only lasted about 2.5 hours at the Colorado Renaissance Festival before the cold rain and hail drove us away.

It's such a bummer, because it would've been really cool without the crappy weather!  The kids actually want to try for another weekend...we'll see.

Kate and I made this cape the night before the festival!  It was a quick and dirty project...she only wore it until the rain and hail started ;/
