Hi.

Welcome to our life as we homeschool our kids with a twist!

Week in the Life of an Unschooler | How We Homeschool #7

Week in the Life of an Unschooler | How We Homeschool #7

I'm a little behind in posting our recaps, so this is a few weeks in the life of an unschooler LOL.  The photos are a mix of my iPhone and my dSLR.

I'll break it into three timeframes:

  1. Virginia Trip
  2. Learning Prompt Boxes
  3. Miscellaneous Joy and Life as Unschoolers
I won't tell you how to unschool your child--there is no cookie cutter way.  But this is how we homeschool and these photos of our 'week in the life' series will give you a good idea of how we unschool!  | GettingUnschooled.com | #homeschooling #unschooling #roadschool #thisishowwehomeschool #whyunschool

Virginia Trip to Visit Family and Friends

Before Joe and I went to Maui, the kids and I jetted home to Virginia for a whirlwind trip and it was so fun!  And we didn't overstay our visit..if you get my drift LOL

It was anxiety-filled plane rides (poor Kate), planting flowers at my parent's new house, gathering almost all of my seven siblings for a party, getting some Fredericksburg eats and treats, hanging with the dog, lego, meeting my sister's pups, hanging with my brother, seeing my girlfriends, and a season pass to Funland :) (We went straight to Verizon to get my new iPhone, so I lost the Funland pics! #nexttime)

Wondering how to unschool your kids?  Live your life!  Travel, cook, play, read, and show them how to live a happy life in this world :)
Play is the central theme of unschooling and asking questions.  When my kids ask me a question, I try to think of a question back to them to get them to consider it and think for themselves.  This is how to unschool :)

Let them play--that's how kids learn and that's how to unschool!
Exposing your kids to older generations is another important way to unschool kids.  There is so much wisdom and advice that can be gained from spending time with grandparents, great aunts or uncles, or family friends.  Exposing kids to different people is a goal of our unschooling our children.
Why homeschool your child is a question you should research if you are inspired to do so--we do it to expose our children to real-life experiences, not worksheets that tell them what the world looks like.
Grandparents (or family friends from the older generation) are important for your child--and for you!  Do more listening and less talking :)
Getting treats from Carl's is a must if you visit Fredericksburg, Virginia!  Homeschooling kids need treat breaks, too ;)
Spending time just sitting and thinking--that's another important part of how to unschool :) Having a dog in your lap also helps!
Aunts and Uncles who work in television (or any industry) are an incredible inspiration to kids who are pondering what they might do when they grow up.  I love that I have seven siblings to expose my kids to along the way :)
Grainy, or not, I have a great picture with my parents.  Get in the frame, mamas!!
Pushing our kids to be aware and make decisions while we travel has been an important lesson for all of us.  I will turn to them for guidance on where to go and which way our gate might be.  Townes is a natural at this and we've been pushing Kate to not depend on us telling her where to go, etc.  I can see a big difference in them as we unschool them!!

New Learning Boxes!  MEL Chemistry and Tinker Crates

We are loving these Tinker Crates and the MEL Chemistry boxes!  We have a loose and relaxed homeschooling approach, but I love having these boxes each month for more instruction and learning opportunities.

Thanks to Aunt Liisa for gifting us our Tinker Crates :)  We decided to sign up for the subscription to continue to get them every month!

The kids have had great questions and created their own experiments out of the boxes which has been fun to watch unfold (we're pretty relaxed with them trying new things when they say, "I wonder what would happen if we ...." (hence the blow torch :)

Why homeschool your child?  To give them time to question, think, and deep dive into topics that spark their interest!
Why homeschool your child?  To relax and let their learning unfold in a natural way.  It's just human nature to want to learn.
Why homeschool your child?  To let go of what they SHOULD be doing and learning and watching them figure things out for themselves.
Why homeschool your child?  It's like volunteering at the public school without all of the other annoying kids ;)  HAHAHA!
Why homeschool your kid?  So that when they ask to use the blow torch to do an experiment you can watch how much fun they have!
Why we homeschool our children is easy to explain:  we get to be there along side of them as they expand their worldview and learn new things.  And we can answer questions and research answers for as long as they want!

Look at her face!  Learning through this cool Tinker Zine  has brought us so much joy....and confidence and is why we homeschool our child.

Miscellaneous Joy

New calendar prep, free play, fishing, Pokemon, Grandma Texas, sick pup, free play with friends, bare feet, cooking, watching old family movies, and yard work is how we homeschool.

Helping mom and dad around the house is a great side benefit of homeschooling the kids!
Their bond has always been strong, but now they're so tight it feels like they're twins.  This is why we homeschool our children.
Why homeschool your child?  To allow them to learn life skills like cooking!
Wondering how to unschool?  Let them take care of themselves--start with cooking!
Trying to learn how to unschool?  Let them play :)

This is how we homeschool.  Relationships and happiness are our primary goal in our unschooling journey!
Letting him fish on his own feels amazing and builds his confidence.  This is how we unschool!
How we Unschool!  Why homeschool your child?  FREEDOM and CONFIDENCE and JOY!
