Let's get unschooled (see what I did there?) about the conventional American diet: this week I'm doing a series on The Ketogenic Diet starting with the Best Keto Diet Cookbooks on Amazon right now. Have you heard of the keto diet? It's the diet that Gwyneth Paltrow and Mick Jagger swear will add 10 years to their lives. It's been getting a lot of buzz lately and I can see why. I'm currently "doing" the keto diet and I'll do a full post about my experience soon, but spoiler: I feel great :)
Wondering what you can eat on a keto diet? If you like bacon, cheese, avocados, and feeling awesome, you will love eating a keto diet and these cookbooks will give you a better idea of what eating keto looks like and will keep you inspired along the way!
Best Keto Diet Cookbooks
1. The Keto Diet: The Complete Guide to a High-Fat Diet
The Keto Diet: The Complete Guide to a High-Fat Diet is one of the first books I got my hands on when I was researching keto cookbooks. It's beefy. And it might not be the best first choice for a beginner. In fact, I ended up putting it back on the shelf because it was overwhelming.
The author, Leann Vogel, has somewhat of a cult following. She has over 100,000 subscribers on her Keto Diet - Healthful Pursuit youtube channel and she knows her stuff. If I was new to low-carb or keto, I would watch some of her youtube videos and then buy this book.
2. Craveable Keto
If you think eating low-carb will be brutal and you'll miss your sweets, Craveable Keto is the right book for you.
This book is all about high-fat, low-carb good easts like buffalo chicken flatbread and chocolate chip cookie bites. YASSS. Kyndra Holley is the successful writer and recipe creator behind this book and the blog, Peace, Love, and Low Carb. She has also written 30 Minute Ketogenic Cooking , Keto Happy Hour and The Primal Low-Carb Kitchen .
3. The 30-Day Ketogenic Cleanse
The title of this keto cookbook makes it all sound so clinical, doesn't it? But 30 Day Ketogenic Cleanse is written with the newbie Keto dieter in mind.
Great recipes and tips and tricks to get you through the (sometimes challenging) first month. (Or for anyone who has 'fallen off the wagon' as the description reads.)
The author, Maria Emmerich, must be doing something right because she currently stands with almost a perfect 5-star rating with 840 readers chiming in!
4. Keto Comfort Foods: Family Favorite Recipes Made Low-Carb and Healthy
Maria has a second book in the best Keto diet cookbooks on Amazon, Keto Comfort Foods . She pulled together 170 favorite family recipes that with some creativity she transformed into keto dishes.
She celebrates the tradition of food as most of our family rituals and socializing with friends revolves around food.
And any cookbook with "comfort foods" in the title sucks me in!
5. Bacon & Butter: The Ultimate Ketogenic Cookbook
The name and front cover of this cookbook could sound disgusting to you or mouthwatering. I'm ambivalent ;) I love bacon and butter, but bacon doesn't agree with me and butter can also give my stomach some trouble if I over indulge. However, most people might think this sounds like a positively sinful cookbook :)
Bacon & Butter: The Ultimate Ketogenic Diet Cookbook is full of decadent breakfasts, lunches, and dinners--to the point that you might feel like you're 'cheating' on your 'diet'!
6. The Complete Ketogenic Diet for Beginners: Your Essential Guide to Living the Keto Lifestyle
This Keto cookbook by Amy Ramos is great for any newbie low-carb dieters out there.
The Complete Ketogenic Diet for Beginners gives you a 2-week eating plan to get you off on the right track. Amy Ramos, a chef of over 25 years, also wrote: Easy Ketogenic Diet Slow Cooking: Low-Carb, High-Fat Keto Recipes That Cook Themselves. That sounds like one I need to get my hands on.
7. Keto: The Complete Guide to Success on The Ketogenic Diet
Maria Emmerich makes the list for a third time! In Keto: The Complete Guide to Success on the Ketogenic Diet she teams up with her husband, Craig Emmerich. He's been coaching clients to better health for over the past eight years.
This book delves deep into the science of the ketogenic diet and how it can truly benefit your health and most likely, save your life. It's less of a traditional cookbook, but the information will blow your mind. It's a fascinating--and kind of a mind bend. Eat MORE fat, not LESS. At the end of the book is a 7-day no-cook keto meal plan.
This is one that I want to buy and have ready to pass out to the skeptics :)
8. The Keto Reset Diet: Reboot Your Metabolism in 21 Days and Burn Fat Forever
This keto cookbook is written by one of the original trailblazers in the Paleo and "Eat Like a Caveman" movements, Mark Sisson of Mark's Daily Apple. He's been writing about the low-carb/Paleo lifestyle since 2006 when the general consensus was that people were crazy to add in more fat and cut out carbs and sugars!
The Keto Reset Diet would be fantastic for someone who is going to be eating Keto for the first time and hasn't had a lot of experience eating a low-carb diet.
This book delves into the science behind why the keto diet (burning fat instead of glucose for energy) is the key to living a long and healthy life. It also shows you how to get your body primed to enter ketosis. Note: Reviewers complained about the disorganization of the photos in relation to the recipes, but thought it was a good intro to a low-carb or keto lifestyle.
9. Quick Keto Meals in 30 Minutes or Less: 100 Easy Prep-and-Cook Low-Carb Recipes
I love a quick and easy recipe and Quick Keto: Meals in 30 Minutes or Less delivers with 100 low-carb ideas to keep you going on your keto diet.
Martina Slajerova fell into the keto lifestyle after being diagnosed with Hashimoto's Disease and feeling frustrated that there was no cure.
She saw so much success on the keto diet that created a keto diet app and keto diet cookbooks to help others navigate this high-fat, low-carb diet.
The phrase "Keto Diet" is misleading since it's more of a lifestyle than a traditional diet
Eating a keto diet is less about 'doing a diet' and more about learning how your body functions best and runs at its peak performance when it's burning fat, not glucose. I've been eating low-carb foods for years and have found it easy to stick with because it improved my life so much. I always thought keto was borderline dangerous and only used for bodybuilders LOL
But not only is eating keto safe, it's the preferred way to nourish our bodies! I'll be doing more posts this week on the items you need for a successful keto diet and my experience on keto.
If you are going to start on your keto journey, I hope you do a lot of research and do some trial and error. Everyone's body is different! I would suggest seeing your doctor to get a full workup done and after trying the keto diet doing more tests to do a comparison.
I hope one of these keto diet cookbooks finds its way into your home. Eating keto comes naturally to me, but if it doesn't for you, having resources like these low-carb, high-fat recipe books will be the difference between success and failure!
