Week in the Life of an Unschooler #4 | How We Unschool
This is a photo diary (plus lots of excess words about the photos) where I showcase a particular week in our unschooling adventure. I would love to see what other unschoolers are doing on a typical week, so I started this Week in the Life of an Unschooler series in case other people are looking for the same! You can find past installments here :)
Highlights from a Week in the Life of an Unschooler
1. Townes' 12th birthday
Townes turned the big 1-2. We had a nice and low-key morning and then we had a meet and greet with some otters at the Denver Aquarium. After that we came home and he got to have unlimited youtube time before we ordered domino's pizza for dinner, his favorite. He even asked that the 'brookie' be his birthday cake! It was a great day :)
2. Denver Aquarium Meet and Greet
Did you know that the Denver Aquarium has animal meet and greets? For $15 a person, you can sign up to meet different animals. And we got lucky because we were the only ones who had signed up, so it was like we had a private meet and greet.
We chose otters. Because, come on. They are one of the cutest animals on earth.
And it did not disappoint. Wow! It exceed our expectations :) Highly recommend!!
Of course we had to do another walk-thru of the aquarium since we were there. I love that place more and more each time we visit.
3. Denver Aquarium Homeschool Day
The Denver Aquarium also hosts homeschooling days every other month (or maybe quarterly?). We finally got on the list for the kids to dissect a squid! It just happened to be the same week as our meet and greet.
I was shocked when Townes said he wanted to do it, too. (There is a full day of classes to choose from that are less....gross.)
Of course, when he came out Kate said, "It was so much COOLER than I expected!" and Townes said, "It was so much GROSSER than I expected."
Plus, Townes said the entire time he kept thinking how sad it was that the squid was dead. Empathy squared with this kid...
But I always love seeing how he puts himself out there. He befriended a kid within minutes and he asked if they could be lab partners. Kate was happy to go by herself and get paired with a random kid. She makes me laugh.
I couldn't believe how many kids attended the Denver Aquarium's Homeschool Day. Colorado has a very large homeschooling community!
4. YouTube Channel: First Video
The kids have been talking about starting a youtube channel and we finally got around to filming their very first video: a Q&A with me as the moderator! We haven't edited yet and it's definitely not going to win any youtube grammys, but it's done. They have to start somewhere!
5. Paint experiment
Joe is building our walk-in closet system using some laminate covered materials. It looks so cool. But, when he cuts it, there are some spots where the laminate gets chipped. So he stopped by an art store and picked out two colors that he thought would be a good fit.
He had Townes do an experiment using various numbers of drops to come up with just the right color. He did a great job! Plus, Joe was able to incorporate ratios, and basic science experiments into his mini-unschooling lesson. (Kate was at dance when he did this, but that didn't stop her from playing in the paint when she got home!)
6. Skiing at Loveland Ski Resort
Joe took Kate back to Loveland Ski Resort while Townes and I hung out in Idaho Springs before we met up for a late lunch at Westbound and Down Brewery Company. We usually hit up Tommy Knockers, but the yelp reviews on this fairly new brewery had us intrigued. It didn't disappoint--so, so good.
Plus, it was a Friday, so there wasn't a wait for a table :) Unschooling definitely has its fringe benefits LOL
Have a great weekend!
