Week in the Life #3 | How We Unschool
Ever wanted to take a peek behind our unschooling curtain? I did a photo diary of the past week so you can see what's the haps around the Craven house. Here are some highlights and just normal stuff we've been up to in this Week in the Life of an Unschooler! (See here for Week 1 and Week 2 of of a Week in the Life of an Unschooler.) Scroll down to go straight to the photo diary :)
Week in the Life of an Unschooler
Valentine's Day is not a big celebration for us. I think it's one of those "Hallmark Holidays". But the kids have been conditioned through school to expect a big to-do around it (and it's turned into a second Halloween, of sorts--they used to come home with loads of candy from exchanging valentines at school!).
With that in mind, I did something a little special by making handmade cards and picking up some Dunkin' Donuts and hot chocolates to start their day! Sadly, I had to actually google what to draw/write on their cards. I ended up drawing a heart and a bunny and writing, "some bunny loves you" and signed it from me and Joe. Google for the win!
Dance and Dinner Dates
Kate takes three dance classes every week and Tuesday's are our day where we do what I like to call the 'dance shuffle'. We only live 6-7 minutes away from the studio, but her two classes on Tuesdays have an hour long break in between. It's just too much driving back and forth.
So Townes and I pick her up from her first dance class and we hit Chipotle (her favorite) and then drop her back at her second class.
It's one of my favorite parts of the week. And not just because I usually order a side of guacamole and chips LOL It's usually pretty quiet in the restaurant and we all just chat or sit quietly. I love it.
Homeschool Chess Club
Townes does a chess class/club twice a month at the library. Kate takes it with him sometimes (or when they're short on players), but usually she likes to sit and read. I usually visit with the other parents, or I edit photos on my computer.
Bathroom Renovation Aftermath
Well, five weeks later and our contractor is done with his part of our bathroom. We're just waiting on Lowe's for our vanity top do-over (long story) and then Joe is going to build out our custom closets (I'm so freaking lucky he's into that stuff!!).
The messy part is done, so it was time to start the deep clean. I took care of our master bedroom. The kids did some of the main floor and stairs.
They really don't complain about doing 'chores', so it's a mystery as to why they don't do more. Haha. No I know why: I'm not a delegator. And I have no system or schedule in place. I need to work on that this year!
Joe was off for President's Day, so we had a great idea to take the kids bowling in the morning. But they were playing so well together upstairs that we took advantage and got some stuff done around the house. By the time we got there, we only had 20 minutes to play before a huge tournament was going to start.
Cue the sad trombone.
No worries, they had an arcade there and it turns out spending $5 on each kid to play some old arcade games is as fun as bowling with your parents. And Joe and I caught up on our email, IG, and whatever else we do to distract ourselves when we're bored ;)
We are so lucky to have a friend who lives across the street. She's a year younger than Kate, but what's a year? And the three of them play so well together--lots of creative and role playing. She's a blessing, for sure!
YOU Want to go to the Library?
Townes begged to go into the library this week when we were dropping off a bunch of books through the drive-through. I was like, ummm, who are you? Kate and I were not feeling it, so I handed him my library card and he walked out with a quiz book on amazing animal facts.
He spent the next 45 minutes reading us questions and quizzing us from this book. I'm getting emotional as I type this.
Our dyslexic son walked into a library, checked out a book, and proceeded to read it to us for nearly an hour. WHUT. You can't tell me that unschooling isn't working. It's working.
- Townes and Planet Earth are such a good match and he gets pretty excited over the crazy big animals they showcase!
- We got a little snow, but not enough!
- And MadLibs are another favorite of these two. Especially when they are "pug"-themed LOL
- Not pictured: board games, olympics watching, parkour and lego playing.
It was a good week!!
Thanks for reading! Have a great week :)
