Hi.

Welcome to our life as we homeschool our kids with a twist!

What Exactly is a "Fresh 48?"

Have you ever heard the term, "Fresh 48?"  Are you reading this and thinking, what the heck is a Fresh 48?  Four dozen fresh eggs?  (I crack myself up...)  Nope.  It's a newborn photo shoot taken within 48 hours of giving birth while you are still at the hospital.

I hadn't heard of it until I was working as a newborn photographer for Bella Baby Photography here in Colorado.  I was giving my spiel one day (about how we do a mini-photo shoot in their room with their new bundle of joy) and the dad piped up with, "yeah, you photographers call it a 'Fresh 48,' right?"  I looked at him blankly and he proceeded to school me on what exactly a Fresh 48 entailed.  He was pretty proud of himself ;)

What is a Fresh 48 newborn photo session?

So what the heck is a Fresh 48?  It's photos taken of you and your family and your new baby in the first day or two after he or she has been born--when they are "Fresh," so to speak.

It truly is my favorite type of photo shoot.  There is so much love and excitement in the air and newborns are such a miracle.  The fact that I am invited to share this moment with a family means the world to me.  I can't get enough of those tiny little creatures!

As the photographer, I'm there to capture moments big and small.  Examples of some images we could create together include:

1.  Getting a checkup from the nurse or doctor

2.  Extended family meeting the baby for the first time

3.  Baby in his/her bassinet

4.  Older siblings meeting their new baby brother or sister

5.  Photos that set the scene and help tell the story

6.  Mom feeding or nursing baby

7.  Any other moments that will help tell the story of your time in the hospital with your new baby

8.  First yawns, diaper changes, feedings, etc!  There are so many firsts to capture.

Why hire a photographer for a Fresh 48 newborn photo session

There are many reasons to hire a photographer for after you give birth in the hospital, at home, or in a birthing center.  Your baby changes SO MUCH in the first week after he or she is born, it's unreal!  Sure, everyone has a pretty good camera phone (pretty great camera phone, even), but to have a professional there to tell your story is invaluable.  They can see things you can't and they have an unbiased perspective.

Even if you have a newborn photographer scheduled for an at-home photo shoot, you should consider asking them to come in for a bit while you're in the hospital.  I would give so much to have those first hours documented of me with my two kids---and so would my children!

The best list of things you need for your hospital bag (for you, for baby, for your husband or partner)!
